Today is Tuesday, September 25th, 2018, and here is a look at some of the things going on around the world this week.
A team of doctors in the United States has announced the success of a new medical device which they say may help paralyzed people be able to walk again. The device, which is surgically placed on the spinal cord of paralysis victims, helps deliver electrical signals from the brain past the damaged area of the spine. This allows the brain to once again communicate with previously paralyzed muscles.
The new report on the breakthrough device, published in the medical journals Nature Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine, describes the successful use of the device in three patients who had previously been paralyzed from the waist down and unable to walk anymore as a result.
While this is not the first successful method for repairing paralysis, it is yet another example of rapidly developing medical technologies that give hope to accident victims who previously thought they would never walk again.
A teenager from Indonesia has been found alive after spending 49 days floating for thousands of kilometers across the Pacific Ocean after the wooden fishing station he was working on broke away from its anchor and began drifting during a storm.
The 18-year old said that he caught fish and cooked them by burning pieces of wood from the structure, then ate the fresh seafood to survive during the month and a half that he was missing. He was finally rescued near the island of Guam by a passing ship from the Central American nation of Panama. The ship took the boy to Japan, from which he was flown back to Indonesia and reunited with his family just in time to celebrate his 19th birthday.
A Chinese hospital ship has arrived in the South American nation of Venezuela to provide medical assistance to Venezuelan patients who are suffering amid a continuing crisis that has caused severe shortages of critical medical supplies in the country.
Venezuela’s president blames the Unites States and the US-led international boycott for the current state of Venezuela’s economy and public services, including public health services.
Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro, recently traveled to Beijing to meet with China’s president to discuss economic cooperation and investment between the two nations.
The Chinese hospital ship, named the Peace Ark, arrived in Venezuela after visiting and previously providing humanitarian and emergency medical assistance in over 40 other countries.
Golf sports legend Tiger Woods has won his first title in more than 5 years at the Tour Championship in the American city of Atlanta.
After rising to fame in the world of golf, Tiger Woods has endured a scandalous past 10 years, beginning with accusations of infidelity in his marriage and a very public divorce from his wife, and several run-ins with the police, one of which resulted in a sentence of one year of probation for reckless driving.
More recently, Woods has suffered from severe pain in his back, for which he has had to have three risky surgeries that have greatly impacted his ability to play golf.
With this new win at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, it appears that Tiger Woods finally has a chance to begin putting his personal troubles behind him and begin rebuilding his career.
A senior United Nations official has warned that the war-torn Middle Eastern nation of Yemen is at risk of suffering a mass famine that could result in a “huge loss of life,” he says.
The ongoing civil war, which has already drawn in other regional powers, has resulted in restricted access to ports for the delivery of food, medicine, and other basic supplies for the country’s residents. As a result, prices for what little food and supplies remain are rising rapidly.
The UN official, Mark Lowcock, warns that this dire situation could quickly lead to the outbreak of a mass famine in the country without much or any warning at all.
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, a deal is in the works for the internationally renowned Italian luxury designer brand Versace to be acquired by the upscale US designer brand Michael Kors for around 2 billion US dollars.
While the brand that was built and made famous by designer Gianni Versace is today most closely associated with his sister, Donatella, it is actually his niece, and Donatella’s daughter, Allegra Versace Beck, to whom Gianni left most of the company’s ownership. Today Allegra still owns 40% of the company, while her more famous mother only owns 16%.
If the deal for Michael Kors to buy Versace goes through, this would not be the company’s first famous luxury brand acquisition. Michael Kors has recently been shopping for and buying up several other retail labels, including the luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo for 1.2 billion US dollars.
While the major hurricane that hit the southeastern coast of the United States recently is long gone, massive flooding of areas further inland in the states of North and South Carolina remain a grave concern for residents of the affected areas.
While the ferocious hurricane itself quickly weakened to become a tropical storm shortly after making landfall in the Carolinas region, the remnants of the storm lingered over the area for days, pouring record amounts of rain into lakes and rivers which then flooded – and continue to flood – hundreds of towns in this mostly rural part of the United States.
America’s national government in Washington has had to step in to help overwhelmed local and state governments with disaster assistance operations and funding, although residents of some of the more rural areas have expressed frustration that they were at first ignored in their calls to the national government for help.
Now those more remote areas have finally been included in the list of areas eligible for assistance, although there is a fear that the worst of the flooding and the damage may still not even be over.
